This collection of zooids (dactylozooids (the hunters), gastrozooids (the eaters), gonozooids (the reproducers) and the pneumatophores (the sailors) are more commonly known as the Portuguese Man o’ War. Not much is known about these creatures except that they sting. Aaron Ansarov turned them into beautiful works of psychedelic art, yet remains unharmed. Ansarov and his wife collected them from the shores of south Florida, transported them in a cooler full of sea-water to his nearby studio, photographed them on light tables (mirrored their image in Photoshop), and returned them to the shore, unharmed. To be clear, however, these creatures are on their death bed once they hit the beach. “When they drift ashore,” says Ansarov, “it is rare for them to survive the tide and be pulled back out to sea…sometimes they may get pulled back out, but it’s up to nature’s design.” To see more of Ansarov’s work, visit his website.

“I was attached to the SAS from time to time but we are forbidden – former, present, or future – to discuss any specific operations. Let’s just say I was in Special Forces and leave it at that. People can read into that what they like.”

Christopher Lee was Ian Fleming’s cousin. Both were distantly related to Charlemagne - and Lee released a heavy metal album in the 80s named after his regal ancestor.

Christopher Lee has an illustrious military past. As well as fighting for the SAS (then known as the Special Operations Executive or SOE), he also volunteered to fight for Finland in the Winter War prior to WW2, during WW2 fought in North Africa, and saw the concentration camps first hand. After WW2, he spent time hunting Nazi war criminals.

It was on the set of the original Lord of the Rings trilogy that Peter Jackson and his crew were given a chilling hint of Lee’s past.

Filming a scene in Return of the King (seen only in the extended version), when Grima Wormtongue (Brad Dourif) stabs Saruman in the back on top of the tower, Christopher Lee corrected Peter Jackson on the fact that when a person is stabbed in the back of the chest, they do not scream (as the director wanted), in fact the air is pushed out of their lungs and they “groan” with an exhalation of air, very quietly, as their lungs have been punctured.

From Peter Jackson’s DVD commentary: “When I was shooting the stabbing shot with Christopher, as a director would, I was explaining to him what he should do… And he says, ‘Peter, have you ever heard the sound a man makes when he’s stabbed in the back?’ And I said, ‘Um, no.’ And he says ‘Well, I have, and I know what to do.’”

The crew said that they knew Christopher Lee had been in the British Royal Air Force Intelligence Service in World War Two, and they didn’t really push him for more information about how he knew in such detail exactly what noise a person makes when this is done to them.

He wouldn’t have told them anyway.

When pressed by an eager interviewer on his SAS past, he leaned forward and whispered: “Can you keep a secret?”

“Yes!” the interviewer replied, breathless with excitement.

“So can I.” replied a smiling Lee, sitting back in his chair.

An end to zero tolerance for willful defiance in L.A. schools?

California schools have long brought about swift punishments for instances of so-called willful defiance, which have disproportionally led to suspensions of many minority students not just in our home state, but nationwide.

Take the case of Damien Valentine, a Manual Arts Senior High School sophomore fighting against the practice, who says that several such punishments earlier in his school accomplished nothing but setting him back.

So just what is “willful defiance?”

That offense is now widely criticized as an arbitrary catchall for any behavior a teacher finds objectionable, such as repeatedly tapping feet on the floor, refusing to remove a hat or failing to wear the school uniform. It accounted for 48% of 710,000 suspensions issued in California in 2011-12, prompting both state and local efforts to restrict its use in disciplinary actions.

A resolution moving through Los Angeles County would make L.A. Unified the first school district in California to ban suspensions for the aforementioned offenses.

Said Tonna Onyendu of the Liberty Hill Foundation, a Los Angeles nonprofit:

“This will be a transformational shift. Instead of punishing students, we’re going to engage them.”

NEW YORK, April 29th, 2013 — Renowned New York City artist Jim Power, aka The Mosaic Man, today launched a fundraising campaign to rebuild his famous Mosaic Trail on Indiegogo, a leading international crowdfunding platform and community.

About the campaign:

For over 25 years, Jim Power, aka The Mosaic Man, has created one of the largest and longest lasting public arts projects with his Legendary Mosaic Trail. The trail of whimsical mosaic designs on lamp poles, planters, sidewalks and storefronts throughout New York City are some of the most recognizable and universally acclaimed works by a local artist. The various pieces are often dedicated to an historical event, person, or landmark, i.e. 9/11 or the former Fillmore East, or simply act as sign-posts and markers. The works are, for the most part, created using recycled materials, built to last, unique to the city, and add a great deal to the quality of life in the neighborhood. In 1988, Jim was authorized by the DOT to build up to 80 light poles. In 2004, he was inducted into the City Lore Peoples Hall of Fame and received an official proclamation from Mayor Bloomberg recognizing him for his selfless contribution to the city. Over the years, Jim’s work has been featured in countless television programs, newspapers, books and magazines worldwide.

All that, and Jim has never received any significant funding for his project from the city or outside groups. And, unfortunately, due to vandalism and destruction, only about a quarter of the lamp posts that make up the original trail are still fully intact.

So, he turns to you…

Now, you can help support the rebuilding of The Legendary Mosaic Trail!

Proceeds from the campaign will go toward supporting all facets of the rebuilding of the trail.

Not only will contributors help support the rebuilding of a part of New York City history, but they will also receive exciting and unique perks related to the trail itself, from stickers or T-shirts featuring Power’s designs, to one-of-a-kind original pieces of art or “artwear,” to opportunities to have your image or brand included on a pole for all to see!

The campaign is the culmination of several years of work by Power and his cohorts to build up visibility about his work on the trail and its impact on the city. The trail as a whole tells the story of an ever-changing neighborhood, what came before, what’s here now, and perhaps what will be in the future.

Power has often said that he is not out for fame. He feels he has a “responsibility to the people who love this work.” He makes his art “for the community that he loves and that loves him so dearly in return.” He is thankful for the continued support from the public throughout the years, and this campaign is the latest way for people to bea part of something big and help Jim see his vision through.

“We’ve got over 50,000 people on Twitter, Facebook, and Tumblr. If everyone gave just a few bucks, we could do this and the world wouldn’t know what him ‘em!” says Power.
